What to Do If It Rains on Your Wedding Day
You’ve spent months dreaming about your wedding—picturing blue skies, golden hour portraits, and the perfect outdoor ceremony. But what if the forecast suddenly calls for rain?
First, take a breath. Rain on your wedding day doesn’t have to be a disaster. In fact, many cultures consider it good luck! With a little planning and flexibility, a rainy wedding day can still be beautiful, romantic, and completely unforgettable.
Here’s what to keep in mind:
Have a Solid Rain Plan (and Discuss It Early!)
If you're planning any part of your wedding outdoors—your ceremony, cocktail hour, or even your reception—you need a clear backup plan. Talk to your venue and coordinator about indoor alternatives, tents, or covered spaces. If tents are needed, reserve them as early as possible—you don’t want to be scrambling the week of your wedding.
Even if your venue has a backup indoor space, think through the logistics: Does it affect your layout? Will your rentals still work? Does your photographer need to adjust their setup?
Get Ahead with Umbrellas, Shoes & Touch-Ups
Umbrellas: Order clear umbrellas for your wedding party and even a few extras for guests. They look great in photos and keep everyone comfortable.
Shoes: If you’re having an outdoor wedding, consider a backup pair of shoes—like boots or flats—that can handle wet or muddy ground. Then switch to your heels once you move inside!
Hair & Makeup: Talk to your hair and makeup artists about styling for rain. Using the correct products for humidity can make a big difference — Trust your glam pros to help you adjust the plan! Additional cosmetic touch-ups may be needed during the day to help keep you looking and feeling your best.
Trust Your Coordinator to Handle the Details
As your wedding coordinator, I always monitor the forecast the week of your wedding and start putting a rain plan into motion if needed. I’ll help you make a call early—usually 24–48 hours out—so vendors can adjust and we can communicate with your wedding party.
And on the day itself? I’ll make sure umbrellas are where they need to be, chairs are dry, photos are still happening, and the vibe stays joyful—no matter what the weather looks like.
Embrace the Rain—You Might Just Love It
Some of the most romantic weddings I’ve ever coordinated happened in the rain. There's something magical about hearing raindrops during your vows or sneaking away for cozy, misty photos as newlyweds.
You can even lean into the vibe with:
Twinkle lights under tents
Soft blankets for guests
A cozy indoor dance floor
A dip-and-kiss photo under a clear umbrella
Rain might not be what you pictured, but it could be better than you imagined.
The Bottom Line: It’s Not About the Weather
It’s not the sunshine, the venue, or the flowers that make your wedding day special—it’s the two of you. You’re getting married surrounded by your people, and rain can’t take that joy away.
With a little planning, a lot of flexibility, and a calm coordinator by your side, your rainy-day wedding can still be stunning.
